Named after the salt marshes nearby, the neighborhood of Del Rey runs along the Ballona Creek and became a popular home for employees of the reclusive industrialist Howard Hughes. There is a large population of Japanese-Americans in the area, though the population is now predominantly Latino.
Many people will soon discover the hidden gem that is Del Rey over the course of the next few years. It has recently shown promise as its business corridor along Centinela has come alive and the neighborhood council celebrated the inauguration of a recurring farmers’ market. Bicycle enthusiasts should take a spin down the Ballona Creek bicycle path, an oasis of protected lanes running from Culver City down to Marina Del Rey along the Ballona Creek where one may join the South Bay bicycle path and head north to Venice Beach/Santa Monica or down to the Manhattan Beach and the South Bay beach communities.
